Wyoming has quite distinct seasons. Spring features delicate wildflowers. Summer, bright sunshine and clear blue skies. Fall, vibrant colors and bugling elk. Winter, a snowy wonderland. During any of these times, Buffalo, Wyoming has all kinds of recreational activities to enjoy.
Cloud Peak Scenic Byway
Highway 16 links the Black Hills and Yellowstone National Park, taking its travelers past Fort McKinney (now the Veteran's Home of Wyoming) and then through 60 miles of breathtaking mountainous scenery. You'll climb over 5,000 feet to an elevation of 9,666 feet at Powder River Pass, finally descending into Ten Sleep Canyon.
Historic Sites
Being situated along the historic Bozeman Trail puts Buffalo, Wyoming in the midst of the legendary, colorful tales of cowboys and sheep herders, renegades and rustlers.
Fairgrounds
With summer comes a multitude of events at the fairgrounds in Buffalo including roundups, rodeos, and horse shows.
Horseback Riding
If you wish to explore on horseback, holding corrals and ramps are available in such areas such as the Circle Park and Hunter Corrals trailheads in the Big Horn National Forest. Several area outfitters provide horses for hourly, day, or overnight trips.
Lake DeSmet
Lake DeSmet is renown for its fantastic fishing opportunities. Boaters, skiers, and swimmers will surely not be disappointed either. Facilities include ramps, docks, campgrounds, and picnic shelters.
Big Horn Mountain
The majestic Big Horn Mountains have a magnetic effect, drawing people to them because of their natural beauty and recreational opportunities. A sportsman's paradise for hunting, fishing, camping, backpacking, picnicking, snowmobiling, skiing, and sledding.
Fishing
Fishing opportunities abound, in the Middle Fork of the Powder River near Kaycee, area reservoirs, and the alpine strams and lakes in the Big Horn National Forest and Cloud Peak Wilderness. You can also toss a line in Clear Creek, which flows right through downtown Buffalo. Guided fishing trips are available. In the winter, anglers enjoy ice fishing at Lake DeSmet and Healy Reservoir. Among the many varieties of fish here, you will find grayling, plus rainbow, brook, brown, cutthroat, and lake trout.
Hunting
Johnson County offers marvelous hunting opportunities for antelope, deer, moose, elk, and upland game birds. Outfitters in the area offer guided hunts. Or you can choose to go it on your own. Make sure you get permission to hunt on private land. Hunter information is available at the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce.
Scenery & Photography
Johnson County is an especially beautiful place when the wildflowers bloom in spring and during the autumn foliage season. While the mountain scenery is indeed stunning, another fine place to enjoy these special seasons is the Clear Creek Trail System.
Skiing
Cross Country Skiing - During the winter months, cross-country skiiers will find miles of groomed trails on which to travel in the Big Horn Mountains. Willow Park and Pole Creek in particular offer great opportunites.

Downhill Skiing- The Big Horns are blessed with some of the finest powder in Wyoming which means downhill skiing at High Park Ski Area, 45 miles west of Buffalo, is excellent.

Snowmobiling - Over 132 miles of groomed trails, plus endless acres of pure powder make the Big Horn Mountains a virtual paradise for snowmobilers. A trail map from the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce provides directions to specific trails.

Golf Course - In 1994, Golf Digest selected the Buffalo Golf Course as one of the best places in Wyoming. Enjoy a challenging 18-hole, par 72 play, combined with spectacular mountain vistas. Greens fees are still under $20 and rentals are available.
